The Toothbrush of the Future?

It’s no secret we’re living in one of the fastest-evolving technological eras of all time. Every day new technology is released that makes life easier and more complex at the same time. The latest innovative breakthrough in the dental world is a toothbrush that seems out of this world.

Colgate, together with Apple, is releasing the next generation of electric toothbrushes called the E1. It will only be available on the Apple website or at Apple stores across the nation as Apple attempts to break into the health scene.

The smart brush claims to provide real-time feedback about your brushing technique, including data that is collected and stored on an app on your iPhone called Colgate Connect. Promotional material about the brush boasts mouth-mapping technology, sonic vibrations and even brush coaching.

What do all these things mean? Mouth-mapping uses the artificial intelligence in the brush to keep track of each tooth that was brushed so you know you didn’t miss anything. The sonic vibrations claim to remove plaque better than standard vibrating bristles, and brush coaching offers feedback on how you can improve your brushing technique combined with the mouth-mapping to see your problem areas.

For kids who use the brush, a game will be available called Go Pirate, which will sync with the brushing sensors and encourage them to brush better and for longer. For the parents, family mode allows you to check up on your children’s brushing techniques and make sure they are doing a good job. No more guessing and hoping their teeth are being adequately cleaned every night to avoid cavities.

It’s almost like a personal dental hygienist helping you brush in the comfort of your own home. Of course, you still need to see your dentist at least twice a year, regardless of how great the app says you are at brushing your teeth. Some plaque can only be removed with professional equipment and techniques.

If you’re due for a professional cleaning and exam, call us today at Arcadia Dental Arts at 602-957-9643. In the meantime, we’d love to hear what you think about the latest and maybe greatest (so far) in dental technology for daily cleaning.
